Brazil's Swimwear Industry
Brazilian Swimwear Industry
Edit
Brazil is known for its beautiful beaches, women, and skimpy bikinis. The Brazilian textile industry, specifically swimwear, has become an integral part of the Brazilian economy. As stated by Cervone Netto, manager of the Texbrasil program, “We are the major creators of beach wear in the world, always exclusive innovations, from the raw materials to the design. This is one of the major reasons why Brazilian beach fashion is considered the object of desire around the world”¹. The bikini was invented by a Brazilian designer named Louis Reard on July 5, 1945. The name “bikini” came to Reard upon news of a nuclear explosion on Bikini Atoll island in the Pacific². These tiny swimsuits not only draw attention and tourism to Brazilian beaches, but they make a huge impact on the Brazilian textile industry as well.
♦Brazilian Beach Fashion Industry exports of textiles reached US$23.38 million¹.
♦US$9.49 million was bought by the United States as the largest importer, followed by Portugal with US$2.55 million, Italy with US$2.14 million, and Spain with US$1.65 million¹.
♦"In 2005, Brazil produced 259,400,000 units of Beach/Bathing wear, according to data of the Brazilian Textile Industry Report, produced by the Institute of Industrial Studies and Marketing (IEMI)"¹.
Some of the styles of bikinis invented by Brazilian designers include:
♦Engana-Mamae
♦Sunquni
♦Triquini
♦Beach Skirt
♦Thong
