When studying the culture in Morocco it is essential to learn about the music. Moroccan music is fascinating and complicated. In Morocco there are so many tribes and languages that the music varies depending on the area. Morocco has three main types of music: Classical Music, Popular Music and Berber or Rural Music.
Classical music has a very complicated musical structure. It is also known by the name Andalusian and is sung in classical Arabic.Some of the instruments used are: Tar (form of tamborine), Rebab, Kanji (violin), ‘Oud (lute and Darbuqa (a clay funnel drum).
Popular music varies and uses more slang. Chaabi, which means popular in Arabic, is a mixture of various types of Moroccan music.It is a blend of Arab, African and Western Styles. Griha is another form of popular music that uses satire to speak of love and war.Malhun is urban poetry and Ra’I music has bass and synthesizers combined with African rhythms. It takes all of these aspects and groups it with slang and it is very good for dancing.
Berber or Rural music is considered the ancient music. It consists of African beats mixed with instruments like bag pipes and the oboe.Berber music is more of a tradition since it is the same music that has gone from village to village for centuries.
Gnawa is a mixture of African rhythms and religious Arabic songs. Gwana is not recognized as a national form of music and has been compared to American jazz and Samba because of the African beats.The music symbolizes the struggles they have been through for centuries, their religious beliefs and are used for ceremonies.
Moroccan music is very diverse and an integral part of the Moroccan culture.It is used in a lot of different ways and symbolizes different things from religious ceremonies, marriages, baby showers and for all types of celebrations or festivals.
