Moroccan Women in Culture
From International Business Wiki
Morocco, viewed by most Americans as a far off distant land full of exotic people and vastly different in culture. As is common place in our culture we tend to judge other cultures with an air of superiority. We generally fear the unknown, truly ignorant of any countries culture but our own. But how does the rest of the world view America and its culture? How does our heritage compare with that of the Moroccan peoples’?
Morocco is generally referred to as an Arab state ground in Islamic religion. Outside of the obvious differences in our cultures such as cuisine, fashion, etc. the major difference in our cultures is the way the women in our societies were viewed. Moroccan men in particular would most likely view the women in our society as brash and unruly, compared to Moroccan women, who are treated more or less like objects in their society. Prior to Morocco’s independence in 1956 women were trained or pressed into servitude much similar to a type of slave. They were not to speak to males without first being spoken to, they were to remain covered and modest in appearance, and they were to submit to the whims and wishes of their husbands under Islamic traditions.
Today the treatment of Moroccan women is more aligned with how Americans treat their women, with respect. They have rights, are allowed to vote, and have the ability to venture into any profession they chose.
I believe that by comparing past and present Moroccan society shows that Moroccans have come to respect our culture. I believe that despite our nations flaws they view our culture as one of unity and aspire to model their own society similar to ours.
