[edit] The Oath and the Executive of Turkey
Upon election of Presidency, the newly nominated Executive of Turkey makes a promise to his people and country. It must be delivered in front of the Turkish Grand National Assembly:
In my capacity as President of the Republic I swear upon my honour and integrity before the Turkish Grand National Assembly and before history to safeguard the existence and independence of the state, the indivisible integrity of the Country and the Nation and the absolute sovereignty of the Nation, to abide by the Constitution, the rule of law, democracy, the principles of the secular Republic, not to deviate from the ideal according to which everyone is entitled to enjoy human rights and fundamental freedoms under conditions of national peace and prosperity and in a spirit of national solidarity and justice, and do my utmost to preserve and exalt the glory and honour of the Republic of Turkey and perform without bias the functions that I have assumed. [1]
This serves as a signal to all; a new Presidency has begun, as well as a promise to best serve in the interest of and its people.
[edit] The Job
The President’s duties and responsibilities are established and “laid down by the Turkish Constitution of 1982” [2]. Written and defined in Chapter II, Articles 101, 102, 103, 104, 105 and 106[2], the President is ‘Head of the state…shall ensure the implementation of the Constitution, and the regular and harmonious functioning of the organs of state’[1].As Head of State, one of the first acts as President is to appoint a council and Prime Minister. The President along with the Prime Minister “share executive powers” [4]. The Prime Minister must also sign off on documents and impart important legislation along with the Turkish President. This offers a balance of power, as it also serves as a checks and balances for the Turkish Government. Moreover, the President is responsible for ratifying international treaties, laws, mobilization of military, referendums, calling new elections for the Turkish Grand National Assembly, and to “accredit representatives of the Turkish state to foreign states and to receive the representatives of foreign states appointed to the Republic of Turkey as to represent the Supreme Military Command of the Turkish Armed Forces on behalf of the Turkish Grand National Assembly”[1].
