Turkish Agriculture
From International Business Wiki
Turkish Farming By Nick Scarpello As the leading exporter of Hazelnuts to the United States and the 4th largest exporter of mushrooms, the Turkish agriculture is an important part of their culture and economy. The Turkish farming community is made up of small farms. These farms have been able to expand with the inclusion of farming equipment such as tractors and other agricultural tool which eliminated the need for animals. These high priced items could not be bought by the poor farmer who was forced to rent land. Agriculture was good for the economy but not for society. The land is still farmed by the elderly in the way it always has, providing them small income and little to live off of. Although small and on the decline Turkish agriculture still makes up 12 percent of their GDP compared to about 2 percent in the EU. Turkey’s agricultural development should begin with all the people who need work to shift toward an agricultural society that is shrinking instead of growing. The industry has many things it must overcome, such as irrigation problems and little research and development. More than halp of the labor force already works in the agriculture industry but expansion must be made if this workforce is to be put to good use.
